Nic Brown Following the mild furore generated by Roger 23's "Extended Play" EP which added a dash of ambience to their usual sound, label co-owner Marco Zenker has given the Ilian Tape faithful what they were really craving: four tracks of thunderous, drum-heavy, techno that frequently cross the border into broken beat territory. For my money, the circuit-blowing inventiveness of Skee Mask's transcendent "Shred" album was Ilian Tape's finest hour but "Phony Pictures" is still an EP crammed with the sort of techno many labels strive to emulate but invariably fall way short of. Superb stuff. Favorite track: First Feeling.
